Médecin de l'âme et homme de culture, Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) s'est intéressé à la gnose dès les années 1910 alors qu'il effectuait des recherches sur les mythologies, mystères et croyances populaires. Son intuition lui disait que cette littérature étrange et difficile détenait un trésor d'images symboliques dont il lui fallait comprendre la signification. Peu après confronté à une crise intérieure (1913) dont il fit le récit dans Le Livre Rouge, Jung en vint à considérer les gnostiques comme les premiers explorateurs de l'inconscient, découvrant le monde des archétypes qui leur inspira leurs visions et leurs mythes.
Comme les alchimistes plus tard, ces visionnaires l'ont souvent guidé dans l'élaboration de la psychologie analytique, "gnostique" en ce qu'elle restitue une plénitude de sens à la vie désorientée de l'homme contemporain. Jugées hérétiques par les premiers auteurs chrétiens, les gnoses dont l'origine est incertaine (Syrie, Iran, Judée ?) laissaient libre cours à l'imagination créatrice et avaient du salut une vision aussi proche des initiations antiques que du christianisme.
Valorisant la découverte de soi à travers l'expérience personnelle du divin, leur enseignement ne pouvait laisser Jung indifférent. Fut-il lui-même "gnostique" comme l'en accusèrent Martin Buber et certains théologiens chrétiens ? S'il le fut, c'est à sa manière : afin de répondre aux exigences spirituelles de son temps désireux de "savoir" plutôt que de croire.
